There are many health benefits that can be achieved by increasing plant-based foods in one’s diet while reducing the amount of meat one consumes. Curious Cruciferous.

Cauliflower belongs to the “Brassicaceae” or “Cruciferous” vegetable family. The name comes from the Latin “Cruciferae,” which means “cross bearing” because the four petals resemble a cross. The naming of plants originated with the renowned Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus, who in the mid-Eighteenth Century developed a two-name system of classification for plant type and species we still use today, even though the Greek and Latin names he assigned are hard for us to pronounce.

Here’s a delicious fact: More than one-third of all pizza orders in America are served with pepperoni topping. This popular “Italian” toping was an invention that was actually born in America, and became popular in the early 1900’s. When Italian immigrants came to America, the local butcher shops began making pepperoni by mashing pork and beef with garlic, fennel and peppers, and then stuffing it inside a casing. Soon the other Italian American food purveyors found uses for pepperoni and began offering it as a delicious pizza topping.

Although meat pepperoni tastes good, it’s certainly not the healthiest choice to have on a pizza! The American Heart Association says that eating less meat or giving it up entirely can improve health and well-being. Specifically, “less meat decreases the risk for heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.”

Though it’s in the cabbage family, it grows from a plant that resembles broccoli, its closest relative.
